My 73 beetle's engine dies when i turn on my headlights or signals

Asked by KristenBeck Aug 03, 2010 at 12:01 PM about the 1973 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had the car painted the first part of the year and ever since i got it back the signals don't work.  Husband replaced the regulator thinking maybe it went bad.  Now, the car will completley die if i try to use my signals and last night discovered it does it if I turn on my headlights.  I would really love to drive my car and use the signals, can anyone give me a hint of where to start?

when you say "car will completely die" does it shut off like you turned the key off, or does it die slowly? is the car equipped with an alternator or generator? are there any blown fuses?

Hi Chris, Louise shuts off like you turned her key off. I'm not sure if it does or not have an alternator. I'm pretty sure it's got a generator ( i think i remember seeing one in there)

so whenever you turn the turn signals on the car dies? and when ever you turn the headlites on the car dies? is this correct? try to start the car with the headlites ON. will the car start, crank, or does nothing..

Check the red cable that comes from the regulator , It must be alone at the fuse panel.# 2 check the cable that comes from the coil , becase when you activate the signals maybe you'r making ground to the circuit and make the short cut to the coil.
