Thermostat and VC gaskets and cam chain tensioners

Asked by Player17 Mar 12, 2010 at 01:03 PM about the 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 VW passat 1.8 liter turbo with 65000 miles with easy driving. Emission light is on and the VW dealer says thermostat needs replacing  and VC gaskets and cam tensioners leaking oil. $1170. This car seems to be an on going maintenance headache with rubber and gasket products. Does this cost seem reasonable and can independent mechanics do this work at a more resonable cost? If I fix this what else am I  in for. All previous work and recalls have been done by a vw dealer.

9 times out of 10 if u research around youll find a vw gooroo who will do it cheaper, as far as more on going problems it going to happen vws workmanship has sufferd but its still an overall good company. Always get a second oppion on ur car. dealers are also out to make the most money, yet smaller shops dont have the rite tools to fix, diagnos your car problems. On the up side to a dealer fix is records for resale.Shows u kept up on time everytime.
