I can't open my fuel cap. The switch is on the door next to switch for trunk. Switch moves but it doesn't open. What can I do?

I wouldn't try the screw driver method... I had a similar problem on my '01 Jetta GLX and it ended up being a blown fuse #14 (10 amp). #14 runs the trunk and fuel door release, sunroof, key fob, window & mirror switches.

On my '03 Passat Wagon, I did not see a manual release cable. I suppose the cable is more easily seen in the sedan. Or maybe it doesn't exist in my model. I inspected fuse #14, and it appeared intact; however, when I put the fuse back into its socket, the fuel lid opener did work, so it looks like the fuse had become badly seated (oops, I had not checked any of the other items that depend on fuse #14 to verify). The lid opener is not listed in the fuse guide; nor does the owner's manual mention which fuse it depends on. That made this thread a huge time saver for me. THANK YOU.

I had the same problem with my 2014 passat.. someone seen me struggling with it and helped me out. All you have to do is lock the car with keyless entry and then unlock the car as well , press on gas cap compartment and it should pop open

I know this is an old thread but had to join just to thank Armaan anyway! SUCH a relief to know what the problem is - was so stressed because fuel door and cargo compartment switches wouldn't work. And had already figured out key fobs weren't either. SO when I saw your post, ran out and checked sun roof and mirrors and sure enough, nada there also. Will change fuse #14 tomorrow :)

Fuse #14 on my 2008 VW Passat Wagon controls the ignition switch and #33 controls the sunroof. Is there another fuse that relates to the fuel filler lid? Tx

My 2014 Passat gas door will not open. I have locked and unlocked the doors. Sunroof and mirrors work. Is there anything else to do?

2002 TDI Jetta wagon The fuse or locking / unlocking the doors didn't work BUT removing the passenger side inside storage compartment door gave access to the solenoid and i could reach in front of it and pull the fuel door linkage toward the back of the car and open the fuel door.

Cavell dis you ever figure it out? I have the 2009 passat wagon and same issue.

Had the same issue today...not sure if it's been the crazy heat we've had for the past week (90s-100s in real feel) but I'm hoping it is and not something more serious/expensive! I pressed in the fuel door while pressing unlock on the car key/remote. After a few presses, I felt the fuel door mechanism lock disengage and voila, the door released.

The cap was very losely attached to a frame with plastic hooks, using blunt force may crash it. My issue is that although the car was unlocked, at least all doors are, it seems I still have to try unlock it multiple times before the oil tank cap can be released. Try that first.

I had same problem with 2014 Passat SE a few months ago. I was able to fix it by holding in the fuel door (as if to open) and simultaneously and repeatedly lock and unlocking the doors using my key fob. Eventually after a few tries, you will feel the fuel door mechanism unlock and at that point, you let the door go and it'll pop open. To prevent future lockouts (and awkward stares at the gas station) A few weeks later, it happened again so after i did the same unlock procedures mentioned above, I also lubricated the locking mechanism for the fuel door and have had no issues since. I think it got jammed from the car wash soap.

The trick of locking the car with key fob and then unlocking it, and THEN pressing the gas door worked perfectly!!!! Thank you so much GuruDXSB! My daughter was stuck and you saved her. :)
