Burning Smell & RPM are very high .2006 2.0T Passat

I've had the car in the shop numerous times and they tell me nothing is wrong.  After driving about 20 minutes it starts to have a burning smell.  Also RPM's will go high and it feels like the car is struggling to go or sometimes it feels like it skips.  Also I notice the dashboard it's in 6th gear, is this correct?

Inspect all serpentine belt pulleys, bearings, wobble...under max stress a pulley's path if loose goes out of alignment and belt burns. Check the belt and see what side you see the wear from the noise and smoke. The pulley tensioner check for tension. Does anyone need an instrument cluster USA? $50.
