If the engine has a turbo, you are probably correct. The turbo's oil seal must have failed, allowing engine oil to be drawn into the engine and being burned. The turbo bearing is lubricated and cooled with the engine's oil. Maintain proper engine oil until you can get it in for repair. Get estimates from independent mechanics. If it's not the turbo, then it might be a head gasket failure.....engine burning coolant.
Thank you Hornet_2497, very helpful. Ah, also, I noticed black oil dripping from one of the exhaust pipes.

Your VW had three engine options and I was surprised to see the turbo charged one is a V-10. That must be the one you have even though you list your vehicle as a V-6. I used to change out turbos on semi trucks and it was not too difficult when it was the oil seal failure. Sometimes the turbine blades would break off and metal parts would mess up the intercooler and destroy the engine. But in your case you just have a seal failure. So don't let them start replacing a whole bunch of extra parts. They have oil on them but it will run okay. I was surprised to learn VW has a massive V-10 engine!
Thank you Hornet, was super worried this would be a complicated and expensive repair.
