What causes a car to hesitate when it
starts

That is usually a sign of lack of fuel. A carburetor if your car has one, or my need to change the fuel filter.

I got told that the Sentras (Mine was a 2005) have issues with the fuel pump. I replaced it and I never had issues with it wanting to turn on.
