My transmission will start off normal however when it shifts to third gear that's where it stays until do turn the key off and restart ...does anyone have any ideas

Sounds like it's going into "limp mode". Find out what trouble codes might be stored in the computer. You can get the codes read at auto zone if you don't have access to a code reader/scanner.
