how to repair s60 rearview mirror

The Rear view mirror is a very complex device as it control the cars access as well so you cant just swap the mirror for a different one without significant recoding. However, if its just the LCD or glass that's broken ie the mirror or auto dimming part and if so it might look like the mirror is all wishy washy, then you can swap over the glass/LCD. There are plenty of posts on youtube showing how to remove the rear view mirror from the top mounting. It's a bit of a pain but quite do-able. However, once you have the mirror module in your hands then do this: 1. Go an find a replacement mirror module. Ebay is a good place. £20 to £30 is a good price. 2. Take the new mirror apart. It just clips together. 3. Remove the Mirror and electronic PCB that is stuck with double sided foam to the mirror. 4. You then need to separate the mirror from the electronics without breaking it. Start by unsoldering the two wires going from the PCB to the mirror. Next is to separate the mirror that is stuck to the PCB. I've seen some people try heating up the mirror and electronics with a hair dryer then carefully prising them apart. I tried this and it didn't work for me. However, I took a lose hacksaw blade and very carefully cut through the foam. Once apart I then removed the sticky foam from the mirror using a blade scrapper. I picked the electronics board clean using my fingers. 5. Pick a time when you don't need the car once you decide to remove the car mirror because if you break the mirror electronics then you wont be able to start the car. 6. Remove the mirror from the car 7. Take it apart (Same way as you took the replacement mirror apart) Mark up where the mirror fits in relation to the PCB so that you can get the PCB lined up exactly when you put the new one on. 8. Separate the mirror glass from the electronics. 9. Clean off the sticky foam on the PCB with your fingers. Very important not to damage the PCB from the original car. 10. Stick a couple of strips of double sided foam tape to the mirror back. 11. Stick the mirror back into the electronic PCB making sure the PCB is positioned in exactly the same place as it came apart. 12. Solder the wires back on. Replace the case a install the mirror.
