Truck won't start

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra when I turn the key all I get is a whining noise from
the starter it will not turn the truck on or turn over how do I fix that what do I
need a new starter

Drop the starter and have someone turn the motor by the crank shaft. Inspect the flywheel to see if it has missing teeth or not. If flywheel is ok id say change the starter and youll be fine.
