grinding noise when in drive why

Why does the transmission my 96 Chevy suburban
4×4 make a grinding noise when in drive and only
in drive

Could be transfer case, front differential. Hub bearing could also grind, but usually after making other noises first. Time for servicing your 4x4.

Bearing is my first thought. I had two go out in a 6 MO period in my 02 Suburban. Luckily they were easy to access and replace. Like a $60 part plus some time replacing.
