Transmission failure

Asked by Paul Mar 15, 2017 at 06:55 PM about the 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Soon I will be swapping a transmission in my 95
Chevy Camaro. I was driving turned a corner and
applied some gas. It then started to make a metal
scraping noise. I lost power from the engine to the
wheels. I pushed in the gas and mph would rise on
the speedometer, but no accelerate. What would
the problem be and any tips  when replacing it?

Well, you say your switching out the trany, for what reason? It sounds like it is bad. And just so I'm not missing anything, you say when you step on the gas the mph, speedometer rises? Are you sure it isn't the RPM gauge that rises?

It happened a good minute ago but I'm sure the mph rose. Not 100 on that tho. The reason I'm switching the tranny is I have a used one from a identical make and model and it being a 95 they have a special 8 prong connector or something. That and the car is undrivable at this point. As it will not engage and a bad metal sound is coming from what seems to be the tranny. Not the biggest car guy or sharpes tool in the shed, but if I can fix it I will be able to see the prittiest thing I have ever saw. I've red and watch video and the forums was the next step. Just seeing if there are some golden rules about tranny swapping and if there is and the tranny gods look unfavorable. Who knows.

The biggest thing with installing a automatic transmission would be to make sure you have the torque converter installed correctly. Once the transmission is bolted up in place, probably should drop the pan and change the transmission filter. When refilling the transmission, only put like 2 or 3 quarts of fluid in, then start the vehicle and with your foot on the brake pedal shift threw the gears. This will circulate the fluid threw the transmission. Then keep adding fluid until it is full. But you want to keep shifting threw the gears to circulate the fluid until it is full.
