1999 saturn sl2 cutting out while driving

Asked by Redrexfan Sep 26, 2012 at 08:20 PM about the 1999 Saturn S-Series 4 Dr SL2 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter just bought this saturn, 124,ooo kl and in mint condition. Never driven in the winter.
3 times in the last 2 weeks the car refused to start. Spins over fine but does not fire.
Try it again, and it starts right up and runs like a top. Sometimes it takes several trys, but when it starts,
it runs great. I suspected the fuel pump relay, and swaped it with the HVAC relay, right beside it.
Now it seems to start every time, but cuts out while driving. Like you shut it off with the key.
Pull over and it starts right back up and runs like a top.
Looking for bad connections, but as of yet can't find any.
Any thoughts on the matter, because it has me scratching.

Replace with the correct relay and I bet it quits cutting out while driving.

Nope! She is now at school and it will not start at all. Fuel pump is humming Service eng soon light stays solid. It has a remote starter. and with it are what looks like 3 fuses, all good. I asked her to pull all 3 fuses, and still no start. Cranks over fine, but does not fire. Will check ohm meter reading on the crankshaft position sensor tomorrow. Is there any other checks that you can think of. The car is a 99 SL2 Thanks

Yes I did. It was the crankshaft position sensor. You can remove it from below the car with just a 10mm wrench. It's located just above the starter. The sensor has 2 wires going to it, and the ohm meter reading of the sensor should be 700-900 ohms. Mine was infinite, or open. Now the car runs like new again, and my daughter is very happy. Thanks

I have a 1999 SL2 191,000 miles. Same problem, was stalling out when driving and then wouldn't start until it cooled down. No service lights and it had spark. Replaced the crankshaft position sensor thanks to this post. Runs like a top for a $20 part. THANK YOU!!!!!
