Possibly timing belt issues. How many miles is on your car? Has timing belt ever been replaced?

^Its got a timing chain. Did you try to start it afterwards to see if it would turn over or if the battery was still supplying power?

dirty egr valve, my boyfriends car did this a month ago, cleaned it with carb cleaner and where it attached to the motor with a dremel (gently) now it runs great!

Try getting a new crankshaft position sensor (sit right above starter on engine block on the DOHC 1.9 4 cyl). Normally, when this sensor gets old or fails you'll be driving along and all of a sudden your engine dies and won't re-start until cool). This sensor can be purchased on Amazon for cheap, make sure you get an AC Delco if possible, it's what came on the car, they work great.
