Overheating & rpms

My 2001 Saturn sc2 is having some issues.
Sometimes when I put it in park the rpms go
way up. It also overheats occasionally.

I took it to a mechanic and they said they found a bad sensor. The sensor was telling the computer that the engine was cold when it was actually hot. That's why it would start smoking when the temperature gauge was only half way. That was a few weeks ago. Since then it’s been running fine.
