My car stopped running 2 x in 2 weeks with no warnings what could it be?

Asked by Teresa May 17, 2017 at 07:18 PM about the 2007 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car stopped 2 X in 2 weeks.  Sitting at a light both times and the car
would stop running and would not start. Got my car pushed out of the street.
Called AAA and by the time they came the car started.  I got towed to
Pepboys first time and I replaced the battery because it was corroded and
was told it was probably that so I changed out the battery.  The second time
again the car stopped and it would not start.  There was no click or sound of
trying to start. Got pushed, AAA showed up and the car started.  They towed
me to local VW dealership.  They have had it for 2 1/2 weeks and can not
find out what the issue is after doing diagnostic test and checking everything.
They have been driving it everyday for 20 or 40 miles to see if it happens to
them.  It has not stopped running for them. Frustrated they can not find
anything wrong.  I am afraid to get it back and it will happen to me on the
freeway or while I have my grand daughter again.  There are no warnings or
check engine lights to get codes.  It is a mystery.  What should we check on?

hate to ask..did anyone check that the fuel punp is staying on...run a wire from the pump positive to a test light inside the car and drive it around your house..you can also try and wiggle the fuses..

Kelly has the right answer, fuel pump is weak, and probably will run for sometime before it shut,s down, espeacialy when fuel get,s lower than half a tank, when fuel level is high pump may stay cooler and you have no issue, but when lower level heats up and shuts off, this might explain it cranking after aaa showed up,it cooled off,and fuel pump will not show any code,s.

I have a friend who had a car that had the similar problem you car does. It would randomly shut off. It has a manual transmission so we would try and give it a big push start but it wouldn't turn on. If we waited a while then it would start up. So he ended up bringing it to a mechanic and it was just a fuse the whole time. Hopefully you car is just an easy fix and it just needs a new fuse.
