leaking head gasket

Asked by Barbara Dec 04, 2018 at 09:57 PM about the 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

regarding original question about loosing anti freeze. The answer I was given
was correct it is a leaking head gasket, and it showed up on the oil dip stick
so I'm sure it got into the engine. It still runs, but I'm not driving it whilge I'm
checking repair options. I can't afford a new engine, this engine was put in in
2004, because it locked up.  I have an offer of 1300.00 from a machanic who
is a good friend of my nephew and owes him a big favor.  I have been told by
the repair shop where I take my car not to do it, he has tried over the years
to do this type of repair, and found it lasted about 100 miles and it happened
again. He thinks I can get 1000.00 for the car the way it is. I am 79 and I love
this car, but I can't take a chance of it happening again, I couldn't afford it.  I
need to make up my mind soon, would you have any input.  Thanx

All things considered, you better trade it on something else. This engine tends to develop head gasket leaks. If repairs fail quickly it was because the head was warped during failure and it was not machined flat. If anyone drives it much, the antifreeze in the oil will ruin the bearings. Next owner should repair head and change oil before driving it.

Tennisshoes is right about the availability of parts, especially for the OBD 1 system. The change over to OBD 2 happened in 1996 and it may upgrade again. You deserve something newer. I'm almost at the age where my next car might be my last one.
