Jeep Wrangler Won't Attempt to Start

Asked by GuruVMP2Y Sep 17, 2018 at 12:37 PM about the 2007 Jeep Wrangler X 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an automatic 2007 Jeep Wrangler that won't attempt to start.  All of
the electronics work fine but the steering wheel won't lock into position and it
feels like it is not fully in park.  I couldn't move the gear shift at all until I
opened the little panel on the gear shift, put in the key, then put the key back
in the ignition, turned to where it should attempt to start, and pressed the
brake.  I was hoping this would allow me to put it back into park and shut it
off to lock the wheel, but the wheel still won't lock which makes me believe
it's not fully in park and why it won't start.

Any advice on what I can try will be appreciated, I'd rather not have to take it
to a repair shop if I can't possibly fix it myself.

If the vehicle can't go into park, the neutral safety switch will prevent it from starting. (That's a safety feature designed to prevent a car from lunging forward if starting and in gear.) From your description it seems you are having problems getting vehicle into park, so look at the shift selector and linkage or cable for adjustment, as well as how it affects the neutral safety switch.

It turned out there was nothing wrong with the car getting into park, the wheel not locking is just a separate issue that I just happened to notice. It turns out the security sensor in the car or key is having an issue and I was able to start my Jeep with the remote starter, but I just wanted to say again thanks for the suggestion.
