Battery hold problem 91 Buick Riviera

Asked by Ltylerd Dec 08, 2019 at 09:54 PM about the 1991 Buick Riviera Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced my alternator not too long ago, and that
solved the problem for a few months, car has ran
better than it had when I first got it. Only issues
I've found are as follows; A.) The switch in my door
doesnt turn off accessories/lights as it should, i
usually turn the car back to accessory then off
again, B.) Starter sounds like it skips from time to
time, more often directly after alternator change
than now, C.) Consistantly changing fuses, may
just be from them being old, they haven't been
replaced since my grandparents first bought it in
91. The only modifications I have made, if you can
call it that, are changing 12 volt plugins and new
rear speakers. I know minimal about the
mechanical side of cars, I can take one apart but
not put it back together, so very minimal
knowledge. (I worked in a scrap yard) please help.

Sounds like the door jam switch needs to be replaced. I see a listing for the passenger's side door on Rockauto.com, but not the driver's side. It looks like it's part of the latch assembly inside of the door. You may have a broken tooth on the flywheel. Remove the flywheel cover to inspect it. Fuses don't just blow because they're old. Something is going on that is causing them to blow! Check the components on the circuit that the fuse(s) protect. Either something is pulling too much power through the circuit or you have a short in the circuit. Do NOT replace a blown fuse with a fuse of a higher amperage either! That's asking for a fire!! Hope that helps! Jim

make sure dimmer switches and top light switches are off. power bcm should turn things off about 10 minutes.

In addition to the previous posters, re-check the new alternator to be sure its the correct one. If it's not the correct amps etc., that could cause your fuses problems. SEMPER FI

btw... the switch is by the hinge area of the door. pry off trim gently with a plastic scraper to avoid damage. there is one allen wrench bolt in the latch release area of the interior to remove . this is how you get into the door innerds.
