1. Make sure the bulbs are working. 2. Do you have all the wires making connections? 3. Is the ground wire connected and have a clean connection? 4. Are you getting power to the brake lights? If not is the fuse good? 5. The top brake light is on a different circuit, so the brake peddle relay is good. 6. My daughter MBZ had all her brake lights go out and it was corrosion on the light socket. (MBZ recall), check, clean and douse with some WD-40 to insure a good connection. 7. Do you have a hitch trailer connection? Some times that causes the lights to not function correctly. Try to see if you have power to the brake light circuit before disconnecting to see it that works. 8. Scratch your head, have a beer and cuss.
had the same problem. poor connection or corroded connections where wires go into the under hood fuse block to the brake relayl. took fuse block apart turned it over and sprayed the connection with electrical connection cleaner available at napa. might even be able to pull relay and spray cleaner down thru connections.
Still not getting brake lights
GuruZZS5S3, what have you done to search out the problem? 01hunter570 stated he found poor connections. My response above should help locate the problem. All except # 8. That's optional. What type of car and year vehicle do you have? If you have a trailer hitch and electrical connection, people in the past disconnected the wiring harness and it fixed the immediate problem. Lest us have a little bit more information to assist in your search for brake lights.
All my lights and bulbs are working. But still have no brake lights
I just figured out my brake light problem after a long couple of under the hood and dash troubleshooting times. I did the easy things first, checked fuses, changed the brakelight switch that is attached to the brake pedal, which did not solve the problem. I checked lots of utube videos, all of which were informative, but didn't get me to the problem. I had a Haynes manual part # 24065, which finally got me to the root cause, which was a broken wire on the plug that attaches to the switch. There is a short connector from the brake light switch, about 6 inches long, it connects to another plug that goes to a large group of wires. The break was on the connector on the end that was not at the switch. Here is how it works, when you step on the brakes, 12 volts is sent to the brake relay under the hood. This relay turns on the brake lights. If that 12 volt control wire is broken, no brake lights. There is a 3rd brake light on the truck on top of the cab, when this relay is inoperative so is the third light. One thing to remember, if you remove the brake light switch, replace the retainer that holds it on, else you could lose your brakes. One other thing to note, the 97 wiring diagram is different from other years, so try to get the specific year. One other thing, the switch on the pedal does not click, it is a silent switch. One more thing to watch out for the brake relay will go in 2 different ways, make note of the emblem on it, you could introduce another problem. I tried to buy the short connector from a gm dealer, they are too old, so be carful handling them. I soldered my severed wires back together. How did they get cut in the first place, probably from the rotating steering shaft parts, good luck, don't give up and leave the beer alone until you are done.
The brake lights on ours it's got a problem with loose bulbs the light bulbs don't fit snug in the socket they wiggle I had all three bright then still the right side doesn't work because of the computer board is bad to the light bulb sockets The wires are old and was dirty we cleaned them they working lights lite up on and off get it all back screwed on then see it still messes up one side works with all bright lights the other side doesn't So the guy whoever had this truck pimped it up with custom brake lights that did work for a few months but now are messing up because their not the original tail-lights for the z71 truck The socket on the circuit board is crap that's our problem with one side half working and the other side not working it all and no back turn lights it's the socket ends not working
I need to get the original light bulb socket/circuit boards for the back brake lights not custom crap because it's not working what they put on it This is a hard project for me to fix the bulbs fit loose to were i can wiggle them around in the socket on the circuit board it'll get fixed i just need time and no rushing
I had all brake lights working when I pushed the brakes but I pushed the 4way flasher button and no brake lights

same problem here with my98 chevy z71 . replaced everything. all lights functional except brake lights. Any tips from chevy owners ?
98 chevy trucks seem to have problems with the brake lights. have someone hold the brake pedal down or use something to wedge against the seat to hold it down. if working alone do it at night or in garage where you can see brake light reflection. go under the hood and wiggle the wires where they go in the fuse box on the drivers side fender well. if the brake lights come on this is where the problem is. if i remember right i sprayed the bottom of the fuse box with electrical cleaner which worked for a while but eventually ended up running a new wire from the relay past where i figured wire was broken solved problem. by the way brake lights are cancelled by the 4 way flashers and just flash instead of staying on continously. hope this helps. 01hunter570 PS. brake light on top of cab worked all the time even before i fixed problem.
