I have a 1992 siverado,the battery light is on and amp gauge low, but but i can stick a screwdriver to the altenater while running, whats the problem

What? That means the alternator is froze up. Take it off and replace, and you might as well do the serpentine belt while you are at it, as that will be all burnt up.
