Possible battery/charging or instrument cluster fault

Asked by Dave Jun 16, 2018 at 08:55 PM about the 2002 Jaguar X-TYPE 3.0L AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 X Type 3.0 Automatic

Had a problem with the dash displaying "gearbox fault" for about a year -
gearbox has been checked and fine - fault code is P1638 which apparently is
CAN bus ECU to instruments but I'm not sure if that is the fault

2 load tests on the charging system - one said I needed a new battery (battery
is 4 months old) and the other said all was well

ECU has been checked and no sign of water damage or corrosion which does
point to the instrument cluster but the car used to start and run fine even with
the engine light on but the problem has got progressively worse and seems to
trip the immobiliser and I can clear the codes after trying for about 30 minutes

Now I'm getting the oil and battery lights on as well and a whiny buzzing
sound somewhere between the battery and the engine - I get conflicting
suggestions from my mechanic and an auto electrician and on another Jag
forum and I'm going round in circles and getting frustrated

Where do I look now? - could it be the alternator or is it more likely to be the
instrument cluster after all? It's a great car but the bills are adding up and
there has to be a point where I have to throw in the towel

Any help will be appreciated
