crank shaft turns but timing belt does not ?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

its like the top of the motor is locked and the bottom timing gear is spinning inside the belt is this possible? starter till turns the crank and alternator and pumps but the belt and top timing gear don't move it just died at a stoplight and wouldn't start no noise from the motor just died like turning the key off. I have delt with broken timing chains and belt in the past but this one didn't brake its a mystery

Simple, your car has a rubber tooted timing belt, if it was never changed, the teeth on the crank sprocket are gone, so the crankshaft pulley just spins free, need to remove timing belt cover and crank pulley to verify this condition
