A shop that is new to me since my great
mechanic retired wants $500 then $900 now
$1400 to fix my head  on my Spectra.  Don't
have the $.  Want to get $300 -$450 for it as
is.  Is that possible ?

Maybe as a parts car, but that really depends on the demand in your area. Can't fault the shop for their evolving price, they are obviously realizing the full extent of the repair and keeping you apprised of the costs. Most head gasket repair jobs run $1,500+, but again depending on where you live.
