2007 Chevy cobalt brake drum hardware falling out

Just replaced my rear shoes and hardware in my 07
cobalt. Now the spring and bracket will not stay on.
It will be fine for two or three days after putting it
back, readjusting etc but it inevitably falls out.
What, why? Heeelp please.

I will say that the ebrake cable snapped after the
first attempt at replacing the shoes. I live in New
England so everything gets salted and rusted in the
first year.

I spread the adjuster tight enough to hold the spring
and bracket, to the point getting the drum on is
very snug. I don’t know what else I could be doing
wrong.

Sounds like the pins that go through the backing plate are not doing their job, either because they were not put in correctly or because the backing plate is corroded to the point that the pins can't grab onto anything and just pull out. I'm assuming you used new pins. If not then that could also be your problem.
