Front speakers don't work and no turn signal or alarm chimes.
Asked by miller4494 Feb 10, 2012 at 01:56 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt LT Coupe FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I recently purchased a used 2007 chevy cobalt ls for my daughter. When we purchased it the front speakers didn't work. I later noticed that there are also no alarm chimes and no turn signal chimes even though signals working fine otherwise. I've researched that the chimes come from the front left speaker. Are the speakers blown or is there an electrical problem with this year cobalt? What is the fix?

Electrical problem. I have a 2008 with the same issue and have changed the speakers twice. My speaker is out again and I'm not replacing it this time...it's futile.
I had the same issue with my 2008, and i pulled the door panel right away and found water got in there somehow. Have you noticed if there is any signs of water?
I have had 2 sets of speakers and 2 radio's replaced on my 2007 Cobalt. I still have problems with them. They said its the auto volume. look it up in the book. I can't remember how to find it. It has worked on and off. in the extreme winter and heat. my radio will not work and the display is all jumbled. this car has been a nightmere.. now i am having issues on and off with the key sticking in the ignition in the second position, aux, no electric at all, the steering wheel was locked and i could not get the key out. The man at the shop where I was getting some things fixed said it needed a jump.. NOT!!! sparks were everywhere when he hooked up the cables. i could not turn the key so therefore it would not start. he could not figure it out..I just messed with it and finally got it to start. everything was ok on the radio but the clock was reset!! Weird!! I also have had alot of front end problems and unusual tire wear... Good luck. Dont recommend this car!!!

miller4494, did you ever solve this problem? We're having the same issue with my daughter's 2010 cobalt. We had some rain recently, so water may be the issue, but it hasn't been before and we've had the car for over a year. Another site suggested checking for loose fuses in the fuse box under the hood. I did that and they were fine.
I have this same issue. I was going to buy new speakers but now I know I may need to do more research before making any buys. I know my back speakers work fine and there was a time where my front speakers would come in and out but now nothing.

i had a real in depth look at one of the dead speakers after this happened to my family's 2007 Cobalt LS, and i discovered that due to poor soldering at the factory too much speaker movement will actually kill the front speakers, because it actually separates the voice coil wires from the tinsel wires due to the bad soldering. so if you do run into this issue, do yourself a favor and buy aftermarket speakers
2008 LT, Owned since new, one owner, had electric steering motor recall done, then had ignition switch recall done, after that for the past few years... No alarm chimes when key on to start, and no turn signal chimes even though signals working fine otherwise, front speakers where intermittent, now rarely on, used to chime and tick, then occasionaly on and off , now on the rare occasion for a short amount of time, intermittent. they rarely sound briefly to remind me they exist...
Contact your local GM dealer ,there is a recall for key stuck in ignition in cobalts (a safety recall ) it’s a free fix in certain model years .
2008 Pontiac G5, basically the same as the Cobalt, purchased new, one owner, one driver, 126,000 km, same problems. From day one the front speakers cut in and out, no chimes or warning buzzers. The daytime running lights started working intermittently, mechanic found a knot tied in the wiring. Front speakers "blown" - I know I've never maxed out the volume! Steering wheel does not usually lock, when it does the key cannot be removed. From day 3 of owning the car the dealership told me repeatedly that there were no problems with the car, implied I didn't understand cars since I am a woman. Now the turn signals will not cancel. Very disappointed with all this but (sorry), good to know I'm not the only one with these issues!
Did anyone ever solve this? I bought a 2009 Cobalt a few months back and I have the same issues
They sell baffles for 8 dollars or I made a waterproof shroud with crafts material and glue gun to seal water out. It is def water. I would also encasing in a thin plastic bag rather that nothing cause you will be back if you do nothing.
Bro my front speakers for my 2008 cobalt don't work either. Along with the alarms. I thought it was because the person who owned it before me blew them out. But it had to be the 07-10 cobalt models. Aftermarket speakers have definitely got to be the way to go.
Got my 08 Cobalt in april, don’t know how many previous owners but it was a last minute buy because my previous car was about to literally fall apart. The turn signals work sometimes but mostly don’t, only the passenger speaker works, but today I drove it and they just didn’t work at all, and when I shut the car off, the key didn’t come out of the ignition until I turned the car back over and drove it for another minute (needed to fix my parking anyways) which I attributed to having something in front of the gear shaft (a giant bear because I literally moved from one state to another today), but after reading this, maybe it’s something more. Really can’t afford to get anything major change, especially with the keys, so hope it’s just speakers!
I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt LT and I just put in a touch screen radio and the front speakers do not work.. The chimes do not work either.. But after I changed the radio the front speakers work off and on.. Would anyone have any clue to what should I do or a fix to this?
The best thing to do is nothing.you know they will say it was because of what you did.lol bye a Honda lol
Ok I’m auto-illiterate so bare with me. I own a 2010 Chevy Cobalt. It’s WATER! Water is re routed from moonroof/sunroof to a tiny tube inside ur doors that gets clogged and water backs up and into ur door paneling and in my case would leak into the passenger side floor area and flood it! Ankle high! Even without a recent rain or wash this would happen. Keep in mind I was clueless to any of wut I’m telling u. It just flooded when ever n for sure when it rained. Horrible smell n u could sumtimes hear water sloshing inside on passenger side. I assumed it was normal fluids inside a car. (Wiper fluids, radiator water, coolant, oil, etc.) Have that checked out it might b the issue.
Turn signals - the switches have a design flaw. If you happen to be touching the lever when it tries to cancel it breaks the canceling tab. Pretty easy fix. New switches on ebay are $14-20 (found one with a 10 yr warranty for 18.88 just now). Youtube shows videos of how to fix it yourself in about 30-60 minutes with minimal tools. As for the speakers it's probably time for aftermarket speakers.

Im having the same problems with my 08!
It’s water leaking in causing the speakers to go. If you decide to replace them glue plastic to the backside of the speaker.
I went to Best Buy for a wiring harness to install an aftermarket radio in my ‘05 Cobalt. The kid there said if I only change the harness I’ll have problems with chimes and the sound through the factory speakers. There’s an interface that also needs to be changed with the harness. It’s a little box that connects the radio with the cars computer, and routs the chimes and radio input to the speakers. It is not usually sold with a harness, but there are complete kits to be found on eBay. The factory radio sounded like crap, but since changing the interface, harness, and radio, the sound improved greatly, and no chime problem. I hope this helps.
