Tahoe 3rd Brake light not working

Asked by biggdoggbri Oct 22, 2012 at 12:52 AM about the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe LS RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a third brake light that wont work. I have checked the wires and plugs, I get power to the light, and when I test the light on my work bench it works fine. Once I plug it back in and install it, it wont work.

Ground contacts somewhere, you seem to have done everything right, the contacts from socket to bulb..... New bulb, whether it works on your bench or not (all of a buck) .....and aerosol contact cleaner, the only thing left is ground on vehicle. Good luck.

I can't get no power to the wire.and there is two cords.the second one is back behind the grommet. So if any of you know which cluster of wires above the tail pipe runs to that light I would greatly appreciate it

Run a power from one of you lower brake lights to the third. You can hide the wire in you upper and side paneling

If your wiring and light test fine, then you may need to turn on your lights (full setup or just parking). My 3rd brake light didn’t fully illuminate during the day, but at night it worked fine. I suspect it must be tied to the parking/night time setting.

So to add to my previous comment, my 3rd brake light on my 2005 Tahoe would only illuminate when I had the parking lights or full setup on. My issue turned out to be a false connection at the brake pedal assembly (assuming something tied to the brake pedal switch). I simply moved the wires and pins around for a better connection at both harnesses around that location, and now my 3rd brake light illuminates during the day and night. Hope this helps someone.
