2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUES, LS 195,000 MILES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2004 GM LS 195,000  miles approx.
I am experiencing black sludge in the front of the engine (see the attached
photo of a napkin and pictures). I have scrubbed the engine several times,
but the sludge returns after driving about 50 to 100 miles. A mechanic has
inspected everything thoroughly and cannot find any leaks after cleaning the
engine as well. Oil/transmission fluid/radiator/antifreeze plastic container: no
leaks and clean. Getting 3000 miles to a quart of oil. Initially,  No noises,
engine very quiet. Car runs well, no problems.

What would produce the black sludge substance?
PS. I used Gunk engine cleaner and Gunk shine spray several times.

No picture? Has a smoke test been done? Exhaust pressure test?

I'm thinking air conditioner compressor oil or power steering fluid. Jim
