How do you remove the manual transmission shift handle in a 2002 Lincoln LS?

I need to remove the manual transmission shift handle so I can remove the
dash.

According to manual you only have to put it in 4th gear to remove center console

I need to remove the dash, not just the center console. As it turned out, putting the trans in 4th and rotating the dash was enough to get it out. Thank you!
