Could possibly be a sending unit gone bad . Testing it is something you need some knowledge of diagnostics for electrical problems. A shop is going to be expensive so I would got to a parts store get a sending unit ask where it is located on your car then replace it yourself . Let the engine cool completely before you start to replace it .
