I have a 2008 Grand Prix and I hear a rattling noise when I accelerate

Asked by wpony Dec 19, 2014 at 06:46 AM about the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One mechanic suspects a loose heat shield on the cataltytic converter. When I inquired on a fix for that they stated that I would have to get another catalytic converter installed. Can the heat shield be tightened or a new one installed ?

No it can't, just cut out or remove the shield, I removed mine on my 2006 a few years ago with no problems.

I got a heat shield on my Cobalt's exhaust system to stop rattling by wrapping a giant gear clamp around it and tightening it. Kind of crude, but seems to be doing the job. You might try that.

On my 2006 Grand Prix, it was the heat shield on the resonator that was loose and rattling due to some of the spot welds tearing apart. When I removed the heat shield, I found an exhaust leak on top, so I had a local muffler shop cut it out and weld in a new resonator. I went ahead and upgraded the resonator and muffler to Magnaflow and it made it sound so much better.
