how do i find out which fuel sending unit i need before droping the tank

The car parts store will sell you the correct part if you tell them what car you have.

i did that but the parts stores around me dont stock them and have two different types of fuel level sensors/sending units and i looked on rock auto as well there are two different one i just want to get the right one so i would only have to drop the tank once

A VIN check should give you the exact part. If the parts store can't do that find a store that can.
