Engine power reduced

Your engine cannot perform the way it should. A cause would be the Throttle Positioning Sensor, or the wiring harness may have a broken wire at the plugin. Have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes to verify.
Can a bad O2 sensor cause reduced engine power?
The check engine light is on, and I am getting a P0155 error code. This is the Bank 2 / Sensor 1 Heater Circuit Malfunction. Would this cause the truck to go into reduced engine power after the motor was running for a while?
I have a 2006 Chevy Malibu and my car says engine power reduced with the engine light on as well. When I press the gas acceleration is slower than normal can you tell me what the problem could be?
Thanks @tennisshoes the code on my car is P2138

I am beyond words....I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu eco model last Sunday I was headed on a day trip with my family when my check engine lite and reduced engine power warning came on....I immediately pulled over and shut the car off scared to death....when we tried to restart car it would not start and was towed to my mechanic.. Today I got the call that this would cost thousands to pull motor and possibly still would need new motor put in. THIS CAR IS A 2013 WITH 76K MILES.... DO NOT BUY A CHEVY THE DO NOT LAST!!!!
I have a 2005 chevy malibu and was told it could be crankshaft or ecm. At Autozone they pulled the code while the check engine light was on and it said code p0601 - the ecm. I found a website, after checking the reviews, called protech auto systems out of ft lauderdale. They sale preprogrammed rebuild ecms for under $300. they match it to my vin. Imagine that compared to the almost $900 stingray chevy wanted to charge me.
I have a 2016 and my engine light came on and it says engine power reduce it came after I hit a bump in street what could it be
I have a 2018 Chev Mailbu, just got it in March with only 11k miles on it. And my check engine light on, saying Engine Power Reduced. Smh, extremely disappointed. It’s doing the same thing my 2005 did. I minds well should of just fixed that one if I was going to run into the same problems smh!
2003 chevy trailblazer Hooked subs up wrong not paying attention hooked them up to fuze box under drivers side back seat and now in restricted power mode all fuses are good under the hood and under the rear seat hooked scan took up codes p1280 and p1275 any one have a solution
Definitely a problem with Chevy Malibu's. I have a 2005. It won't accelrate, dies when you depress the brake and the reduced engine power warning come up after it rains. The moonroof leaks so I thought maybe the Throttle positioning sensor but pulled it and it looks fine and appears it never got wet. Not sure what to look at next.
I think the malibu should be on a major recall i have a 2017 and i have already had 9 senors changed and now the the engine power reduced light is on this is ridiculous. I repoted this to the BBB already i feel i should get a new car from GM.

I am dealing with this same issue on my 2017 Malibu. I began six months after I purchased it new. I have had multiple sensors replaced also. Currently the car does this every time I drive it.

I have a 2017 malibu lt with the same issue after getting it through the dealership exactly a year ago. Bearly finding out what you people post sure am upset going to see if I should just trade it
TeamCrumpLove answered 6 years ago
@MrTravieso, I would say yes, trade it, while it is still under warranty. I am trying to trade mine now. Of course they are saying I have thousands in negative equity (i bought it new). However, I filed a complaint with the Attorney General and then the dealership and GM decided to try and work with me on the trade.

Ok the issue- the new body style Chevrolet Malibu 2016-2018 Common problem is the throttle positioning sensor. When it fails check engine light comes on and it goes into reduced power mode..... you’ll lose power and get to try to coast to the breakdown lane. This is dangerous and definitely should be subject to recall. At this point you can’t get the sensor because Chevrolet has zero parts available and may be redesigning it? I know this because my 2016 Chevy Malibu hybrid with 24,900 miles on it,and under full factory warranty, has been in the shop the last 19 days. While I wait for the part I just pray they aren’t giving The same defective life-threatening sensor I had in the car three weeks ago. I lost power on the freeway twice.... When somebody that owns one of these cars dies we’ll get More information... I just hope it isn’t you.
We are in the middle of a polar vortex in MN, temps this morning were around -30. I had this happen as I was getting to work, my boyfriend is going to run the code a bit later when it is supposed to warm up but could it be temperature related?
I have a 2017 malibu , my check engine light came on again tonight for the 5th time . And it threw the code on my dash " engine power is reduced " . Definitely disappointed in this vehicle considering I bought it brand new in 2017. I wouldnt buy one ! Onstar sent me a email and mine is my transmission and engine .! Time to trade it in !

I also have a 2017 with the same problem. I did a lot of research and found the answer. The car will go into "limp mode" very little acceleration, no guts. 1st Chevy/GM tod me it was a calibration software needed. That was not it. The 2nd visit they told me what I already told them. "Throttle positioning sensor" acceleration sensor. It is covered by warranty but the problem is that the part is on back order I was told. That would fit other blogs I've read that said Chevy doesn't actually have a new part and are redesigning it. Last blog said car had been in shop 19 days and still waiting. Guess I'll have this warranty rental for awhile.

Thank you for the help. We were just getting on a very dangerous part of the interstate when this happened. could have been disastrous. Seeing these post let’s us know Chevy has a major issue.

This just happened to me. I have a 2017 Chevy Malibu. On the side of the highway right now. Bought this car new. I also have an issue where the car doesn’t recognize that I put the car in park. This will be my last Chevy.
I have a 2013 Chevy malibu ltz this also just happened to me for the second time. Both times I was driving with my kids on the freeway and it completely stopped my car. Had to get it towed both times. Even at the shop they call told me they couldn’t fix it’s problem on it. Codes it gave me are P2227, P0641, P0192.
I own a 2017 Malibu with 27,000. Last night (dark and raining) the auto stop kicked in at a traffic light (on a hill). When the light turned green, I took my foot off the brake and stepped on the accelerator. The car did not move. A message came up that said reduced engine power. I hit the start button, nothing. I put the car in neutral and rolled back into the right lane. And put on my flashers. I tried restarting the car several times. 20 minutes later, the car started with the check engine light on. There was no shoulder to get onto (if the car was running). I was almost rear ended before the police arrived. THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING DEFECT IN THE MALIBU AND NEEDS A RECALL NOW!!!!!!!
Wow, my check engine light just came on along with the message engine power reduced. Going to the dealership in the morning but I'm terrified of the results. I have the powertrain warranty but I am out of the 36,000 B2B warranty.
Same issue here 2016 Malibu. First, it was the gear shift sensor, where the engine would not turn off because the car didn't know it was in Park. Took 2 trips to the dealership to get that resolved (at least so far). Now it's this engine power reduced problem. They're replacing something to do with the gas pedal, but I will never feel safe driving this again. It's back to Toyota for me.
Same problem here with my 2017 premiere. 1st instance was about a year after I bought the car. Then about 6 months after that a couple times...fast forward until the last couple days it is constantly in the "engine power reduced" mode with zero power. I drive about 45 minutes, one way to work on a major highway where the average speed is nearly 80 mph. Scary indeed, and the dealership can't get me in for 3 days. After reading this thread, I am far from hopeful this will be a small issue.
Sorry but you are all wrong on this. The Chevy Malibu (check the bulletins) burns oil faster due to it's performance. You must check your oil. The reduction happened to me today. I was down two quarts. Pulled over, put in two quarts, back up to full power. I believe this is a warning system. If you are running low on oil the car automatically reduces the engine power so you don't burn up the engine. Keep checking the oil level. If it drops add some. It's a performance issue and a good one, although a pain because you don't normally need to check oil levels in todays car. I love my Malibu.
More than likely it's one of your sensors
My check engine light has been on 12 time and not one time was the oil low or needed. Each time it was a sensor covered under the dealership warranty the Chevy Malibu 2017 is s piece of shit trade it I asap.
I think the sensor in my car was telling me the oil was low. Thank goodness for that. On the "not checking oil" that's not what I meant. What I meant was normally we're not, on a fairly new car, checking engine fluids ever 2k miles. If you do that's great, but most don't and won't. I have no intention of trading in my Malibu.
Bloody awful. I've got a 2016 Malibu LT. Bought it last year (Feb 2018) for $14k in VA. Today I had my 3rd check engine light; same message as discussed above. "Engine Power reduced." To say I'm livid is understatement. The first code was U0415 (which occurred a couples months into owning it). Second one happened in Feb of this year (2019). Code is P06DE. And the third which I'm taking to auto-zone for them to pull the code for free. Along with these check engine lights issue, I had one other issue. When I shift to park, I would get an alert telling me to shift the gear to Park (which it was already was). A sensor problem and the codes were U1502 and U1510. Got that also fixed. I will try to see what this third check engine light issue is. My Oil at 40% according to the dashboard so I don't think it's an oil change issue, but I'll update after tomorrow. I don't know what to do. I can't return the vehicle, but my faith in American made vehicle has taken a hit.
@ GuruSZS6K I wasn't due for an oil change till another 1K mile. I wanted to know if you pay any attention to oil percentage level on your dashboard Or just automatically change the oil every 2K miles?
I don't pay attention to the lights, I just check the oil myself every couple thousand miles and change it every 4-6k -- as it turns out my assumption was wrong. Although it did happen. The car started doing the "reduced engine" thing again and twice a day. So I took it to my mechanic (not the dealership) whom I really trust. He ran the diagnostic and came up with the P-notices. Turns out that was NOT it either. It was the "accelerator pedal." He replaced it today. I pick it up tomorrow and will report back. I do use the "cruise control" a lot so not sure if that attributes to the problem, but he said the "accelerator pedal" issue is common on this car. I do NOT have the limited model.

Update. The third check engine light had the same code: P06DE. Took it to the dealership who fixed the second engine light with same code. Apparently, the issue was that my engine oil was low. Turns out that I need to check the level after every fuel fill. (I'm going to do it every 200 to 500 miles since I never let my fuel reach below 1/2 gauge level). So they filled it up for me and voila, issue solved. @GuruSZS6K You're right on checking the oil levels once in a while. That's what the guy told me to do. I'm still due for a schedule maintenance after 1K miles. For now my advise, check your engine oil levels and learn how to fill it up. Read the manual to know which type of oil to get. Perform other maintenance on your Malibu. Those cars need more attention than other modern cars
cool, glad it worked out. thanx again for posting! bob
There is a recall for this, we just received a letter in the mail regarding this problem. There is a condition that affects the electrical connection to one of the vehicles accelerator pedal position sensors. If the connection is interrupted the accelerator pedal will still function, but the vehicle will enter a reduced engine power mode.

God, this is terrible! I have a 2017 Malibu that I got new, has 40,000 km. The 'shift to park' thing happens on and off |(with no rhyme or reason), and today I had the engine light, 'engine power reduced' experience. The oil was changed 2 weeks ago & is at 89%. I can't afford to get rid of this car, but I don't want to stall on the 401! Is there some way GM can be compelled to fix this thing?!
Take it to any GMC dealership and they have to fix it for free.. ours is also a 2017 Malibu, we brought it in and they fixed the problem.
smakcanada answered 5 years ago
I took my Malibu into the dealership and they ordered in the parts and repaired it under the warranty. No more engine losing power nessage. It doesn't have anything to do with engine oil. My oil is changed frequently. it's a sticky gas peddle. They also fixed the 'shift to park' problem; didn't cost me a cent. They have a notification from GM. Apparently it's not a recall because not every Malubu has the problem.

Hello. I have the same issue with my Chevy Malibu 2017 Premier car (88K miles on it already). I remember receiving the notice a few months ago and now my check engine light and reduced engine power notice came on. If this is the case, do I just contact my GM dealer and they will have the GM alert on file that there is an issue or do I need to tell them I received the notice and think I have the same issue? Thanks in advance.
Hi all I have chevy malibu 2013, 2.4 cc I face an issue every day morning where when I start engine does not respond and dashboard shows code 67 and code 92, after multi tries enine start normally, any one have idea aboyt this issue or i should go to my mechanic?

Luckily this chevy malibu with 48k is a rental. Glad I rented it, so I can warn others not to buy one! Engine power reduction is dangerous. Hopefully, I survive the 2 hour drive tomorrow.
Hi i have a 2006 malibu that has engine reduce power and disabled engine code po601 i also have to jump start the car from time to time help please
Fuck the Chevy Malibu! Ima blow this fkn car to pieces! Enough said...
I have a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu I have spent $800 on it the past 6months. Changed part after part, kept throwing codes service stabilitrak and reduced engine power would come on car would stall, very dangerous. I was about to buy a throttle body so I looked up on how to remove something an came across a video. They man had just changed the throttle body an found that the intake was loose. So I went our took it apart my intake was loose the bolt you could take it out with your fingers. So I tightened a bolt up fix my problem. Thank God it fixed I hope this helps.
I recently acquired a 2003 Malibu with the same exact problem. The Catalytic converter was bad initially and the converter and both oxygen sensors were replaced greatly reducing the issue but once the vehicle reached its operating temperature and had been run on the highway over a time the issue resurfaced. It only occurred however once the vehicle had come to a stop and again tried to accelerate It is also significant the if the EGR valve is disconnected the issue disappears but then throw's a light because of the EGR disconnection. While I've ordered an EGR valve, I noted that others with the same issue replaced the EGR valve with no positive effect. I'm thinking that the EGR valve fails to close correctly and results in emission problems thus eventually ruining the Catalytic converter. My hope is that replacing both will resolve but it remains to be seen. Ultimately the issue is an engineering problem and the obvious emission related issue in not setting a MIL code, If its not resolved buy replacing both the EGR valve and the catalytic converter, then I'[m thinking its a faulty PCM, but it costs more to replace than the cars value.
