Liftgate on my Ford Edge won’t open by remote?

I recently bought a used 2008 Ford Edge and the
liftgate wont open by the button in the car or the
button on the key fob but I can open it manually.
Whenever I push either button it sounds like it tries
to open (and it comes up as “hatch ajar” on my
dash and then I have to manually open it and close
it). Do the struts just need replaced? They’re pretty
rusty and look a little worse for wear, or is there
another problem?

Did you ever find a fix for this? Mine is doing the same thing.

Unattach the positive cable on the battery for a few minutes,then put back it will reset everything.The liftgate should open.
