Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Please, is the Toyota 4runner 2008 V8 use a Timing belt or Timing chain. Just saw a V8 4runner 2008 year model in MA and dealer wrote back it uses a timing Chain.

Can you advise as to whether it is better with a chain or belt in the V8 in case some have timing belts.

Does the V6 use a chain or belt?

How may miles must one cover before chainging the belt or chain

In 2008 the 4.0 V6 used timing chains. The v6 has used a chain since 2003 when the v6 4.0 came out, replacing the old 3.4 v6 which did use a timing belt. Now the 4.7 V8 in the 4runners uses a timing BELT since 2003 when a v8 was an option in a 4runner. It is better to have a chain because there is no recommended replacement interval and they typically last the life of the car or several hundred thousand miles. Now the timing belt do have to be replaced as maintenance. Not sure what they recommend on that exact year but typically the timing belt is a 100K mile service and get ready to spend around $1000+ for that service. I have 2 v6 4runners, 203K miles on one and 281K miles on the other.

I have a 2008 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V8 and it has a timing belt. I was told by my Toyota dealer/service department to get ready to have it, and the water pump changed. $450 for the timing belt, $300 for the pump.
