why would a2008 mercury mountainer blow off the hoses on the radiator?

Yes....hoses are made from inferior quality butyl-rubber...if you're serious about keepin' 'er on the road for more than ten years would switch to Silicone rubber....blue like the kind you'll find under the hood of police interceptors known for reliability and not reducing under compression of the hose clamps and blowin' loose- will shop for you----

They arent known for head gaskets in my opnion. Do you have a 4.0 or a 4.6? I guess it could be a head gasket causing too much pressure but the cap is meant to hold a certain amount and release any thing above that pressure. Only time ive had hoses blow off is when the clamp either wasnt on or weak and not holding. Did you get the correct cap?

Ive drive/work on a mountaineer/explorer almost everyday at work.

The hoses are weak and need to be changed. The clamps arent the best but we put brand new clamps on the hoses. The radiator will over heat after running for about 5 mins. You release the radiator cap and a ton of steam will come out. what do you think?

Either have lots of air in the system from not being bled correctly or head gasket.

Well we were told by a guy at lithia ford to take out the dipstick and put a lighter to it and if it made any bubbles and crackling noises that it was a head gasket. We did that and nothing happened and the oil smells normal. How do you bleed the system? We o=have only have the vehicle four 4 months.

Is there a cap actually on the radiator or is there a remote resviour with a pressure holding cap?

remote resivour with pressure holding cap and we have a cap on the radiator as well

if I'm not mistaken the 05 had the remote tank with the pressurized cap

we are talking about an 08 mercury mountaineer. The radiator has a cap and there is a resviour with a flip top lid on top of the resivour tank. Does that help

Gonna need to get a spill free funnel. Google it and it will provide picture of what it looks like. It needs to be attached to the radiator and filled with coolant and run the engine an air will come out because you will be at the highest point in the system. Turn the heat on inside the car and get the rpm's about 1200 to 1500 when you have all the air out you will be getting good heat out of the vents. But you needs to keep an eye on the funnel an keep it full and make sure it doesnt flow over which it will tend to do until the thermostat opens. If the bubbles never stop coming then you have a bad head gasket.

Yeah the flip flop lid doesnt hold pressure thats just the overflow jug. The cap on the radiator holds the pressure.

@bradley you may be thinking if the 4.6. Pretty sure all the 4.0's have the cap on the radiator. Most other model fords have the jug you are referring to.

The translucent overfill jug/reservoir is that way so that you can see the levels indicated FULL level about halfway up and COLD about a quarter of the way up...filling it up to the top will result in spillage~
