Installing aftermarket stereo

Will cutting the wires on my stock stereo
wiring harness to solder to a aftermarket
wiring harness, mess anything up in my car?

Was told by someone that they did that once and cutting one of the wires made it where nothing (doing with the stereo) would work after.

Thank you for your time to answer. Very helpful and i will look into buying a wiring harness from crutchfield.com before doing it myself.
