2009 Jetta overheating issues

Asked by Sarah May 21, 2019 at 11:01 PM about the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Back story: My 2009 Vw Jetta began overheating
at idle, and cooled down as long as I was moving.
I’d hear my fans going So assumed those were
fine. The temperature gauge would only slightly go
up. So, I let it be for about 6 months when I
eventually started losing coolant so brought it to
the mechanic and he replaced the water pipe. I
haven’t had any leaks or loss of coolant since. I
drove off from the mechanic and later that day I
noticed  the temperature gauge started creeping
again only at idle. Like most of the problems in my
life, I ignored it. And flash forward to today(about a
year later). It overheats at about a mile driving
down the road. Still no coolant leaks.
My uncle and step dad work on cars in their spare
time and just so happen to have some spare time.
They replaced the thermostat and flushed the
radiator. The thermostat had a lot of rusty gunk. At
some point through all of this they did some kind
of test with the water pump and it appeared to be
functioning. They probably should’ve have just
done the water pump as well but we’ve been trying
to go the least expensive route. And it’s still
overheating. :(

When googling answers the one specific to my
cars symptoms says the cooling fans. But I can
hear mine running. They even stay on about 5-10
min after I turn my car off and then they shut off.
(Which I have read is typical)
Is it possible they just aren’t running efficiently?
And if so what all would I need to replace?

Update: the water pump was definitely bad. Replaced water pump, thermostat, and coolant adapter. Still overheating when driving down the road. Hoping we just need to bleed air out but still having issues. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. *Both fans are functioning and no apparent leaks*

Check in front of your radiator to verify that no items(leaves or plastic) have built up. If you radiator is partially blocked your car will start to overheat when you slow down or idle the vehicle. Last, verify that the coolant that you are using is designed for VW vehicles. If not, some coolants will actually damage your coolant system including blocking your heater coil.
