tell me about gear ratio.

Question type: General

What do the numbers mean to move the shift leaver to right or left.  is "4" a higher gear to the highest in cruising?  Will it help me save gas?

If you have a 4 speed transmission, yes, '4' is the highest and always use it for high speed, like freeway or open road cruising. "1" is sometimes called "granny gear" in a manual transmission, especially in a big SUV or truck and you might not ever use it in normal everyday driving, begin in 1 or 2, and go through the gears. Until you run out of gears.
