i just need to be able to get to work tonight will it work for 30 miles tops
yes if you have not replaced the pads the caliper will compress and it will grind the pad al lot it is fine to change one caliper if it is bled right afterward

i just need to know if i take my driver side caliper off if i can drive it to work
you cannot just take a brake caliper off with nothing to put back in its place that's stupid it would leak fluid all over the place your brake system runs on a vacuum if you break that then your brakes will not work
it is better to run on one with a sealed system the one with a broken vaccum system

well obviously there'd be no pressure until i plugged/ stopped up the line
still it is better to run on one with a sealed system the one with a broken vaccum system

will it work? for short term driving of 45 mins tops split in half
does it not compress or not come back in it is ok just be aware that you might have to replace everything on that side pads caliper and rotor
just leave it on with the pads not off

The reason I said to replace both calipers, is that I live in a snowy climate and the road department uses a lot of salt/chemicals on our roads and it causes a lot of brake problems. I was speaking to a possible larger problem. It would still do to inspect the pads on the other side to make sure they are wearing evenly. So, yes you can replace just one side but make sure and give the other side a good inspection. Mike.
Sure, you can drive with only one caliper- ON A MAGIC CAR IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE SOMEWHERE-

That is just insane, crumbob -- and don't you know how to punctuate? It is unclear exactly what any of your answers are. In short, it is not recommended that he remove the caliper -- even if he is able to do so, so long as he's able to close/plug that particular brake line -- but yes, he CAN; it will not cause damage to that rotor -- that is nonsense.
I agree with Jared n Houston you actually can run it without caliper and rotor as long as you clamp/seal or cap off the break like going to the side without the rotors/caliper
HI there, similar question as above. I'm purchasing a vehicle but it has a farked caliper, to the point of leaking fluid. So, I can hire a trailer to transport the vehicle, which is only 20 minutes from where I will be going to, or drive it. My question is, could I clamp off the hose to the farked caliper and still maintain use of brakes, obviously minus the side that's clamped, or by doing this would it create damage or just be too unsafe? Thoughts and opinions appreciated! Nate

Nate, you CAN clamp the one side to keep the fluid from leaking although it is not recommended. Just be sure to bleed the brake system properly afterward. You can find videos on YouTube for directions on how to bleed the system if needed. I hope this was helpful. -Lawson
I wish I knew what to think here, Trust and or believe. I am in a similar predicament and I am about to clamp off my driver side line as well just to make it by until I can the proper repairs. I also do not recommend what it is I am about to do so do not be a follower, do the research and make your decision based on your own abilities and needs. The professional have spoken and warned us.
You can definitely run with one less caliper. As long as the brake line leading to that caliper is plugged/capped/blocked/etc. I did it for about 6 months on a car until I had the money for proper repair.
DarbyPK should be banned. This is a death wish for the driver, passengers and the car you run into.
If your pads in rear are down to metal on one side, can you remove the pad and put it back together until the repair to get by?
