cracked windshield. do I need to replace with OEM glass?

You have to use OEM glass because of the rain sensor built into the glass. You can not transfer the sensor over to the new windshield. And if you have heads up display you need to have a OEM windshield as well for the heads up display to work.
"don't accept a "deal" from your insurance company just because your car is 4 years old." Some insurance policies have provisions that state if the vehicle is over a certain amount of years that OEM will not be allowed IF a suitable AM/LKQ part is available. If his vehicle is truly 4 years old then you all gave him really bad advice. The insurance is going to pay what the insurance is going to pay no matter who you use. If he used OEM glass and there's suitable AM/LKQ glass the insurance would only pay the amount for the AM/LKQ and then the dealership would go after CP1000 for the rest.
