if the battery dies. will it cause the car to stop running or loss of power?

It depends some cars ( specaially diesel engines) run with the dead battery. Most other cars will stop if the battery is completely dead since most of the electronic engine management components need power from the battery in order to function at all. Take the battery to Auto Zone or similar parts store and get it tested they will tell you and sell you one also.

Yes it will but I would certainly look at your battery cables for corrosion in the process. Don't rely entirely on them to do it unless it's someone you trust because they definitely would love to sell you a new battery. If the battery voltage Falls too low around 11 volts then it will start to sputter until it dies.
