528i transmission brain

My car would not shift out of drive. Towed
to shop. Car shifted into drive. Will not shift
out of drive now. Tech claims transmission
brain will not talk to shifter, it is an
electronic problem. Wants 1700.00 for the
repair. Does any of this make sense
