I used to own a 1998 VW Jetta. I too lost my radio. There should be a section in your owners manual which will steer you in the right direction. I believe the 1st step was entering my radio code. If none of this is helpful, call your local VW dealer, they should be able to help you without having to the car in. I'm not sure if the newer VW models operate the same way as the older VWs.

Did you at any time Have to jump your car from a dead battery or remove a battery cable? is so you might have put your radio in security lock. Also try taking a flash light and shining it on the screen If you see digits your screen backlight blew iff not its something else.
