My check engine light came on out of no where. Is this a sensor problem?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I just got my oil changed recently. It has a little over 50k miles on it. I've never had any problems since I bought it used in August from Whaling City Ford. Carfax were fine too. I'm not going to pay a ridiculous amount of money if all they have to do is plug it in and clear it. I read that some people were having sensor problems because of the lack of gas cap on this model.

The "Check Engine" light illuminates whenever the Computer detects a concern with a system it controls. The Gas Cap is a common failure for any modern vehicle. It isn't sensor problem, it's a leak that has been detected by the computer. to simply plug in and clear the codes repairs nothing and, of course, the code and light will return before long. Like Tom said, get the code and post it here - we'll see what you have going on. BTW - Carfax is a waste of money.

I have an escape 2014 and the engine light would go on and off for over a thousand miles. I took it to a ford dealership and they said the coolant valve needed replaced, over $400.00 with labor. I declined the service and found that the coolant overflow reservore was below the min when cold. I filled it with 12 oz of fluid and it solved the problem
I have the same car. They just told me that the coolant thing has been recalled and it needs to be replaced for free. I had the same lights going on.
i have a Ford Escape 2012 and that light( engine) when on and i don't known what's wrong . hope is nothing bad.....now i want to sell my SUV 2012 .

I have a 2017 Ford Escape S. The check rngine light came on suddenly. I took it to the local Ford Dealer and found out that it was a software upgrade to latest service level. It was showing codes P0300 and P0316 per TSB-17-2076 this may occur on Escapes and Fusions built prior to 2 February 2017
I have a 2013 Ford escape and my check engine light is on and I can't accelerate a
GuruLFNY1 that’s sounds like the camshaft
My 2018 Ford Escapes check engine light came on. I only have 21,000 miles on it. We noticed that the coolant level was below the minimum line. We took it to a Ford dealership and they couldn’t figure out the issue. They did a reset and the light went off. A week later the check engine light came back on. Took it back to the dealership. After more pinpoint tests, they are having to replace my engine.

Mine is 2017 and it is showing the same problem when I do hard acceleration. I've been to the dealership a few times for the same problem. They changed the sparkplug once but I have to go back because the problem persist. She has only 21K miles.
My 2015 escape has the same issue. I had an oil change and two weeks later this light came on. The dealership ran it for codes but no codes came up. They filled the coolant but the check engine light is still appearing and still no code. They reached out to ford engineers and the engineers were were clueless and offered nothing helpful. My dealership wants to run a $145 diagnostic test because they think it’s the fuel level sensor. If it is the sensor then I would have to pay an additional $100 for the part and labor. I would prefer not. Any suggestions?
My "Check Engine Soon" indicator is turned on as well. How do I check the error code by myself?
my engine light just came on yesterday and my dad changed my spark plugs two weeks ago and when i placed gas in ,my car it strarted to shack shortly after that?
My friend’s 2017 Escape just had the light come on, no known issues. After reading this thread, I've told him to check his gas cap first. If that's not it, I'll tell him to check is coolant (all fluids, while he's at it, especially oil, before he drives a long distance). If his coolant's low, top it up and see if he's eligible for that recall. If he really wants to avoid the mechanic, disconnect the battery to re-set the check engine light, but probably worth going to a mechanic if it's anything but the gas cap, I would think. Thanks, CarGurus!
It just happened to me a few days ago and I took some advice from this site and check my levels of all my fluids in my car filled up some of them especially the coolant and bingo change o the light went off

Mine is a 2017 and went to the Ford dealership too many times. They changed the sparkplug and the problem persisted. After they changed the gas cap it stopped.

Spoke to a former mechanic who left local ford dealership since the new owners were shady. He told me that with the coolant leaking the light goes on. Bottom line when they do the coolant pressure check, the coolant is leaking into the engine. Engine will need to be replaced. It originally had recalls on multiple years and different models of Ford cars, but my vin was not on list. Ford regional mgr was only willing to pay $1,000 towards the $8,000 bill, which is mostly labor. I love my escape, but from the research I have done...i will never buy a ford again. They know that this is an issue for many years and are still producing cars with the bad parts. Consumers who don't do their homework will get swindled into to paying to do the repair. As i am writing this, all I can think of is a class action suit. I will not and cannot afford to pkay russian roulette even when I livevmy suv!! Power to the people.

I’ve had the same issue back in January For my 2015 Escape when my kilometres were just below 100k. I asked for a Ford mechanic to review thinking It would be covered by my warranty...no go. They ran a diagnostic and found it was a solenoid issue having to do with gas of some sort. Each time I fill my gas tank, I have a hard time starting the engine. Between filling however, it starts perfectly fine. I have yet to get the light reset and issue resolved but will be taking my Escape in shortly.

Mine is a 2017 and had it serviced many times because of the check engine light on. After updating the system and changing the ac kit element & gasket oil, it never came on again.

Guru94Y876 the check engine light recall Over the capless gas tank nor the check engine light coming on with low coolant, has now bearing that would effect coolant leaking into an engine. You “mechanic friend” should be able to drain the oil and show you the water in the oil. I find this hard to believe that your coolant leaked into your motor “motor oil” that would be, so much so that it drained the reserve and the system so much it triggered the “check engine “ light. If all of that happened, why ha ent your cracked the engine or have a catastrophic failure with your engine? That much water in the oil would cause the engine to fail. By the way 8,000 dollars???? Seriously? A new crate motor is far less than that. A salvaged motor half of that. Sounds to me like your mechanic friend might be the one who is “shady” and was let go of the Dord Dealership.
My check engine light came on. I took it in and two codes came up P0451 & P0234. Two valves needing replacing $840.00 fix. My 2014 Escape has 92000.kms

To follow up on my previous post, 4 months ago, I contacted Ford Canada customer service and mentioned the name of my mechanic. Despite that Ford won’t admit the P451 error is a recall issue, the contacted my mechanic/svc mgr. after lengthy conversation, they say a p451 can be diagnosed through a diagnostic test but isn’t as specific as the Ford diagnostic. He agreed to pay for the test, replaced the parts solinoid and rather than charge me the $800+ he struck a deal with me since I’m a regular customer. He pd for all but $300 as they are able to swing this type of deal for “top-rated” customers. Did I believe that line? No. But I figure they knew I was likely right that it should be a warranty and rather than open a can of worms, they swept it under the rug!!

Guru99ssFZ - I had this same issue with my 2016 Escape. The evap purge control valve needs to be replaced. My son replaced it yesterday and so far so good. Will know for sure the next time I fill up. Cost around $150 for the part at the local dealership. It was recommended from my mechanic friends to purchase the genuine Ford part.
