Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 Honda CRV, A/C compressor blew 3 months
ago, and the dealer gave me a one-time goodwill,
as my 7-year warrantee just expired.  I just had to
cover the diagnostic fee; $145.

My car once again, my a/c began blowing warm air,
so I took it in today.  I was told that my freon was
depleted; therefore, they believed it was a leak.
They said they would put a dye in the freon,  drive
around and find the leak.  This will cost me $300!!!

I brought up the fact that I just had the a/c served
and repaired and believed the leak was related.  I
have read stories about the imploding air
compressor spreading debris and particles
throughout the engine, so it needs to be throughly
flushed and hoses replaced.

Does this sound right? Has anyone else had this
problem after repairing the air compressor?  Thank
you!

Yes it is true. When an AC compressor goes bad it throws small metal shards throughout the AC system causing plugged up lines and components. The item that takes the biggest hit is the condenser and the dryer. It is a known fact in the industry to change both the condenser and the dryer when putting on a new compressor. Also it is a good practice to blow the lines out of this metal. The condenser has very small passage ways for the refrigerant to pass and these metal flakes plug up your flow. When you do not change all 3, you will be putting a new compressor on again soon. Then you get to put all 3 on the right way.

While you have everything off it is a must to change all the o-rings to eliminate leaks

Thank you for your answers!!! Despite knowing that the A/C leak is directly related to the busted compressor they just replaced 3 months ago, I can't prove it. Nor can I prove that they didn't flush it. I had to pay $300 for the mechanic to use UV dye to find the leak. They discovered that it was a leaky A/C valve and said that they don't just repair the valve, they replace the entire A/C line---another $250!!! I said no thanks, I'll have the leaky valve repaired myself!!!

If you are talking about an expansion valve, these are replaced not repaired. Not sure about your model but you can replace the valve without replacing the line. A valve is about $25 - $35
