AC fan won't blow

Asked by Luna Jun 21, 2016 at 02:35 PM about the 2010 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello! Long story short my AC fan would
only work on certain settings, started to
gradually have slower and slower fan
speed, and eventually altogether died.
Everything I've read says it sounds like a
bad resistor. I ordered the resistor from
Advance and replaced it today, no luck.

No fan movement, no changes except I
lightly smacked the bottom of (what I
guess is) the fan motor assembly with the
base of my palm and was surprised to hear
a small whimper of life from the fan for
about 2 seconds before it died again.
Should I replace the fan motor  now? Or
what's the next part to suspect? Thanks.

P.S.  the old resistor was rusty and all but
falling apart. The cable that plugs into it
looks ok. Just FYI.

Dodge fan motors are famous for going bad from dusty conditions. Fortunately they are easy to replace with minimal tools. The fan is located under the passenger side dash and I find that it is a good place for a mouse nest if the truck sits for a while. The squirrel cage fan won't run if the nest is built in it. Pull the fan motor out and bench test it by applying 12 volts to it. If it runs then it probably is a fuse, switch or wiring.
