Will not START

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2012 RAM 1500 5.7L. Having issue where in the morning truck will not start.
I get flashing lights in the dash and clock on radio goes to 12:00. Gives a
turning over sound upon each turn of the key. Wait 15 minutes or so and
will just barely get started with dash lights flickering. When trying to start in
afternoon it will start first turn of key with no flashing dash lights.

I'm not sure but have your battery tested. When your clock resets, it's from a voltage drop to Zero while cranking. Dropping below 8 volts while cranking, I always considered a red flag. Okay, it performs better in the afternoon because driving it recently recharged the battery. But setting (longer) overnight it has time to lose power. That's what failing batteries do because of internal shorts dragging it down slowly. If that battery is more than four years old, it is ready to go out. Tell us how it works out. Eager to learn.

Very pleased to say that a new battery does wonders to engaging and starting vehicle. Your answer helped to ease the thought that it may be a ECM unit. This was the first time I have had any issue with starting the Ram. Very glad that the battery has been exchanged and next week's camping trip is still a GO!. Thanks Hornet.
