What could cause a 2011 BMW to shut down at 70 mph and not restart

Asked by Plambeth568 Jul 07, 2020 at 06:42 PM about the 2011 BMW 3 Series 328i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What would cause my 2011 BMW 328 to just shut
down going 70 mph on the interstate and not start
back up? I had just gassed it to go around some
slow cars and the rpm gas just dropped to zero and
left me on the side of the road.

Could be a lot of things. Something in the ignition system failed and now you do not have spark or it could be a fuel system failure.

I also forgot to mention that it is showing an exclamation point on the dash as a warning. No circle around it or anything, just the exclamation point

I would scan for codes. Without information all I can do is guess. Another possibility is a broken timing chain.
