1987 BMW 325 I what does it mean if engine light comes on intermittently?

Means it has an intermittent issue with engine managment system. You should see if you can pull the codes from the ecu.

Being intermittent, it could be anything. That light could simply come on because the oil pressure drops while you're sitting at a red light, or you really could be throwing up a code. Make sure the light is on when you check for codes though, or you wont get anything.
