What is the purpose of the yellow dash light next to oil service gauge below the speed and tach? 1989 325i

I'm thinking of buying the car and the light does not go out when the car is shut off

Are you talking about the yellow dash that is to the right of the oil service counter and then is followed by the red dash?

That is just the service interval light saying you are in need of service soon if in the red then you would be over due over service. Nothing to really be worried about.
